November 2007

I briefly alluded to another Christmas present I’m making my sister (who I hope doesn’t read this blog)…

Many years ago, when my sister and I were little kids, our aunt made us some beloved mittens that were black with a white intarsia dog on each. I can’t find the mittens now, but the dog looked something like this.

My sister loves mittens and has a white dog that looks a lot like that, so I thought… why not make her an adult-sized version? I think she will really like them!

If you’ve seen a pattern for what I’ve described, please tell me where I can get it. Otherwise, it shouldn’t be too hard to wing it. Can anyone recommend some good mitten yarn?

These are some of the photos I took while I was in NJ last weekend. DC has some beautiful foliage as well, but I haven’t been able to photograph it because it gets dark so early now. Next weekend, I hope.

So Foliage ended up being a slouchy hat, which was fine because my sister liked it that way (and, um, it hid my mistakes). Doesn’t it look great on her?

I usually don’t get excited about pork, but I saw this recipe a while back and it looked so festive and autumnal that I had to try it.

By some cruel twist of fate, I always end up dating the world’s pickiest eaters. I knew C would have issues with this meal because she doesn’t like apples and cranberries, or any fruit/meat combination. I was hoping I could sneak the fruit in and she wouldn’t notice, but she caught me while I was throwing chopped apples and cranberries into the pot.

The filling was actually very spicy and tangy, more like a barbecue sauce than a fruity thing, but it was too late by then. I just shrugged and ate it myself; more for me! At least she likes kale.

nota bene : I came across photos of some cakes I’ve decorated, and decided to share. They’re in the “edible creations” section at the top of the page; maybe someday I’ll make a separate page for them.

I started a scarf the other night:

I had some unidentified yarn that my mom gave me: a thick black chenille (I think it may be Lion Brand), and some multicolored boucle. I liked the way the yarns looked next to each other, so I decided to make a scarf in alternating blocks of garter stitch.

I like the effect a lot, and the material is really plush.  If there’s enough yarn leftover I’ll make a matching hat (maybe another Urchin?). Unlike most knitters, I hate having a stash and I’ll come up with any excuse to use up excess yarn.

… so I don’t have any updates. Sorry.

If you’re looking for something to do, please vote for my friend Alexander, who’s a finalist for MetroWeekly’s Coverboy of the Year!

I cast on for Foliage last night, using KnitPicks Shine Worsted in Green Apple. The color is crisp and bold and luscious, just like its namesake.

The lace pattern is coming along nicely and crown shaping was a lot of fun. C spilled a glass of water on it and the yarn became a pain to work with after that, so I called it quits for the night. I hope it dries so I can return to it today!

It makes me look 10 lbs heavier, but otherwise I’m happy with how it turned out.

I got this email from my LYS. Wouldn’t it make a neat Christmas present for a fellow knitter?

I would like to invite you to become a Charter Member to the Stitch DC Stash Club.  Inspired by the Sheep and Wool Festival this spring, I have been busy looking for unique yarns to fill our shelves.  The only problem is that most smaller producers can only fulfill smaller limited orders.  So instead I’m inviting you to join a limited membership Stash Club that will receive my favorite yarns each month.

As a member, starting in January 2009, you will receive a new yarn each month along with a special pattern.  PLUS, you’ll be invited to two Stash Club Parties and receive special discounts throughout the year.

Membership is $165 for the year.  But, if you join by November 15, you will be a Charter Member and save with a membership of only $135 plus you’ll receive an extra gift of yarn this December.

To join, just call and sign up.  Remember, membership also makes a great gift — just let us know that you’d like to sign up a loved one for membership and we’ll do all the rest.

Happy Crafting,
Marie
